We believe in a truly sustainable future. EcoDiamond exists to create diamonds that carry deep meaning - not merely market price. Unlike traditional diamonds, whose values often reflect speculation, stock market trends, or investor-driven bubbles, our diamonds stand apart. We don't believe your most precious memories should be tied to commodities traded on exchanges.
We don't believe that love, grief, or legacy should depend on market fluctuations. And we certainly don't believe something that symbolizes purity should come from environmental or human harm. At EcoDiamond, our diamonds aren't influenced by hedge fund actions or supply chain disruptions. We grow our diamonds with purpose, transparency, and respect, ensuring their true worth comes from what they represent to you - not what they're worth to the market.

Where does the term “carat” come from?

Where does the term “carat” come from?

If you know the answer to this question, someone must have told you! One of the vital 4C’s of a Diamond is “carat”. It’s the unit we use to measure the weight of a Diamond. Did you know that the word carat comes from different languages’ word for carob?

The carob tree

The carob tree

The carob tree, native to the Mediterranean area, has been in cultivation for at least 4000 years. The ancient Greeks planted it, Mohammed’s army ate kharoub, the Jewish sage Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai subsisted on its fruit for 24 years and some claim its pods are the “locusts” referred to in the New Testament to have provided sustenance to John the Baptist while he was in the wilderness.

So, what does all this have to do with Diamonds?

So, what does all this have to do with Diamonds?

The carob seeds themselves are inedible, but they were observed to have a very uniform size and weight. This made them very useful for traders. The seeds were used to balance a scale when weighing precious gemstones, where the tiniest change in weight can make an enormous difference. A higher number of seeds indicated a heavier gemstone, and therefore a higher value. The use of carob seeds was consistent throughout the Middle East and Europe. In areas of the world where carob was not as ubiquitous, grains of wheat or rice were used in similar ways to discern the weight of diamonds.

In 1907, the Fourth General Conference on Weights and Measures adopted the ancient metric carat as the official measurement for gemstone weights. Today, measuring by carat is the standard around the world. One metric carat is one-fifth of a gram (0.2 grams) – about the weight of a paper clip!

The vital 4C’s of every single diamond:

Color:

Diamonds of all colors can be found in nature – over 300 colors have so far been identified. However, diamonds come in an infinite number of shades and hues, so the categorization can be a bit generalized.

Carat:

Instead of grams or kilos, diamonds are measured in carats. 1 carat is 0.2 grams; 5 carats is 1 gram. As the carat count increases, so does the size of the diamond – and its market value.

Cut:

Often confused with the shape, the cut defines how the diamond sparkles. An excellent cut will have the best light performance, but various attributes are taken into consideration when evaluating, some of which cannot be measured by an untrained eye.

Clarity:

The clarity of the diamond is evaluated by the amount of blemishes and incisions in the crystal. When diamonds are created from carbon under extreme pressure and heat, imperfections may form in their crystal structures. These imperfections sometimes remain trapped inside and affect the diamond’s clarity.
